Sara Cat

Obituary of Sara Cat

We got Sara after we returned from 6 months in Hawaii caring for my husband's mother who had suffered a massive stroke. Sara was an integral part of our family. Jim's mom dearly loved her. She spent hours on her bed or in her lap trying to get the frozen parts of mom to work. She would lick her arm and leg by the hour as they were paralyzed by the stroke.

Mom ultimately ended up in a Nursing facility and Sara's company to us became even more soothing. She loved us no matter how we were feeling.

On Thanksgiving morning of 1998, at about 1:00am, I could feel Sara near my legs. It was her habit to take a bath just before she nodded off for the night. She always slept at the foot of our bed near my legs. This particular night, however, she was making a rather loud sound, one that was unusual. She also was leaning very hard on my one leg. It took a few minutes for me to wake my husband, Jim, and when he finally got the light on, we were shocked to find Sara had died, apparently in a convulsion.

My poor husband sat up all night with Sara in his lap, rocking her in his chair sobbing. She was his baby. We had been in Oregon for only a short time. We did not feel like we were permanently residing (forever) as our home is on Whidbey Island in Washington. We both felt she should be buried in the cemetery with Jim's mom, but we couldn't drive 5 hours to Whidbey with this being Thanksgiving and a house full of people. We certainly did not want to bury her in our back yard in Oregon, we were not going to put her in the freezer.there was only one option.cremation. I called a friend and asked if he would arrange cremation for Sara.

When he delivered her back to us, she was in a little brown paper box. It wasn't very big and it certainly wasn't pretty. Jim spent a lot of time holding the box and missing Sara. After a few weeks, I couldn't stand looking at the box any longer. I ordered an urn and had it engraved with her name, date of birth and death and her picture. Now our Sara sits by the TV and we feel like her place is with us. When we adopted our new kitty, Daisey Mae, Jim brought her into the house and took her directly to meet our Sara. Some may think we are goofy, but our kitties are well loved.
